Classic satire on the dehumanization of industrial workers which preceded Chaplin's Modern Times by five years. This quick paced and amusing experiment has Louis escaping prison to become a phonograph company tycoon. Emile, a fellow inmate, later flees prison to work in his friend's factory where he meets and falls in love with a fellow factory worker, Jeanne, overcoming the objections of her protective uncle, Paul Imaque, with Emile's help. Gangsters attempt to blackmail Louis. With police looking for him Louis flees with Emile, who has given up Jeanne to another worker she truly loves. Louis and Emile take to the open road, bumming their way to freedom

Highly stylized comedy satirizing the mechanization of modern life. Considered to be the possible inspiration to Chaplin's "Modern times."
