This film centers on the life of agricultural workers in postwar Italy. A jewel thief (Walter) and his lover (Francesca) seek refuge on a train carrying migrant workers to the rice fields. Once they arrive, each develops another relationship. Walter charms Silvana into helping him steal the rice harvest. Francesca and her new lover foil the plan and Walter is shot by Silvana when she discovers that she has been duped. Silvana, seduced and victimized by the economic and cultural influences of the time, responds ultimately by committing suicide
