Hermann & Maria Braun are married on the day before Hermann leaves for the Eastern Front, where he is subsequently reported missing. After the war, Maria hears that he is dead, and becomes involved with Bill, an American soldier. When Hermann returns from captivity in Russia and Bill is killed, Hermann claims that he is the murderer. Maria visits him in jail & promises to work for their mutual future on his release
