In the winter of 1932 Kisaku, a farmer from Akita Prefecture, makes his way to Hokkaido to work in the coal mines. His wife, Sayo, is concerned about his health and follows after him with their two children. She is told that Kisaku died in an explosion and later goes to work as a miner to support herself and the children.
