A prostitute is murdered in a Rome park, and her body dumped on the banks of the Tiber. While offscreen police investigators interrogate a variety of male suspects, the events depicted on screen display their alibis from each individual perspective. Bertolucci's first feature, made when the director was only 21 (he had served as an assistant on Accattone the previous year), was based on a story by Pier Paolo Pasolini, and has been described as "an ambitious amalgam of a film noir atmosphere and narrative style with a neorealist concentration on behavioral detail and realistic settings" (Robert Burgoyne in the International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers)

Set in Rome's underworld, the story involves a murdered whore and the various working-class and criminal elements who are directly or tangentically involved in the crime
