Il Trovatore revolves around its two female characters. Azucena is the daughter of a gypsy who, 15 years before, was burned as a witch for cursing the younger son of a nobleman. In revenge, Azucena abducted the younger son to throw into the embers of the same fire, but in her distress, threw in her own young son. She has brought up the other child as her own. Leonora (Stella) is a lady-in-waiting at Court who is loved by two men, the Count di Luna who is the elder son of the nobleman who had Azucena's mother burned, and Manrico, the Troubadour, and leader of the rebel forces engaging in civil war against the Count di Luna.
